BioImages Salon 2010 Rules

Each institution, company, or individual must complete a master entry form and include the appropriate fee with the submission(s). In addition, a completed entry label is required for each entry. Attach the label to the back of each print, printed piece, or motion media entry. Do not include any identification on the front of the entry.

Only entries submitted in compliance with the stated requirements will be accepted and considered for judging. At the discretion of the BioImages Chair, an entry may be moved into a more appropriate class or category.

All entries will be judged on impact, composition, clarity, scientific content, technique, lighting, image quality, presentation, creativity, originality and effective use of the medium to fulfill its stated purpose. At the discretion of the judges, the following awards may be issued (a full set of awards may not always be made):

  • Award of Excellence is awarded to entries that achieve the highest standards of professionalism.
  • Citation of Merit is awarded to entries that meet high standards of professionalism.
  • Acceptance into the BioImages salon is granted for entries that meet technical proficiency standards.

Merit Awards are sponsored categories that reflect the achievement of a high caliber of proficiency in a specific area:

  • BCA Medical Education: Best medical teaching aid in each division; includes a $25.00 award.
  • Charles Foster Memorial Citation: Best color photo-micrograph print.
  • C. Graham Eddy Endoscopic: Demonstrates the most successful use of endoscopic equipment; includes a $25.00 award.
  • Canadian Founders Natural Science: Best print in the Natural Science category.
  • Warren Sturgis Motion Media Award: Best entry in Motion Media Division.

One Best of Show is awarded with a prize of $350 US to the most outstanding entry in the competition and is selected from the Award of Excellence winners.

Awards will be publicly announced at the Awards Ceremony during the opening reception of the annual meeting. All entries selected for exhibition will be displayed during the Association’s annual meeting.

Entrants retain their copyrights for all works, but the BCA reserves the right to future use without prior notice or additional compensation. Entries may be published in the Journal of Biocommunication, BCA News, press releases, or other publications of the Association and on the Web at www.bca.org.

Entry Submission Requirements

Entries must not have been previously submitted to BioImages. It is the sole responsibility of the entrant to secure any necessary patient and/or copyright permissions. Print entries for Still Media and Graphics Media (except posters), must be mounted on foam board and framed with a 16" x 20" white bevel mat with an image area no larger than 11" x 14". Motion media may be submitted on VHS, CD, or DVD and shipped appropriately protected. Use of photo shipping cases and shipment by a traceable method is highly recommended.

All entries must be accompanied by a CD with an electronic version of the entry suitable for reproduction (TIFF image to fit 2,100 by 2,100 pixels, RGB color or Grayscale, with embedded profile). Specify purpose (e.g., educational, promotional), intended audience, and any other pertinent information on the entry form.

BioImages committee members and judges will handle all entries carefully. Neither the BioCommunications Association, Inc., nor its agents assume responsibility for holding charges, delays, loss or damage of any image in handling, judging, storing, shipping, transit, and/or repackaging.

Return of Entries
