Call for Abstracts

The BioCommunications Association (BCA) announces a Call for Papers for BIOCOMM2013, an international meeting for users and producers of visual communications media in the medicine and life sciences, to be held June 17-21 at Asilomar Conference Grounds on the Monterey Peninsula in California. Submission deadline has been extended to February 15, 2012.

BIOCOMM2013 is an international annual meeting that includes a packed program of seminars, workshops, a juried media salon, and commercial exhibits to provide attendees with inspiration and the latest information on visual media in the life sciences.

Topics to be considered include but are not limited to:

  • Imaging technologies
  • Web applications and solutions
  • Interactive sessions
  • e-learning
  • Digital asset management
  • Software skills
  • Social networking
  • Management challenges
 
  • Facility planning
  • Promotional and marketing
  • Usability and accessibility
  • Augmented reality
  • Photography
  • Graphics
  • Video

If you have a topic related to visual communications in the life sciences that is not listed, and would like to submit a paper for presentation, please submit your paper for consideration.

Presentation Types

Plenary presentations
Intended to address the entire group of attendees. Topics should be something of interest for everyone in attendance. Each topic is covered in 20-45 minutes.

InfoShare
A collection of short presentations of general interest on new equipment, materials, or processes. Each topic is covered in 3-7 minutes.

Show us Your Stuff
A collection of short presentations that explains how a photograph was acquired. Each topic is covered in 15 minutes.

Current Trends
A collection of presentations of general or special interest on emerging trends identified within a geographic region, specialty, or software utilization. Each topic is covered in 10 to 20 minutes.

Workshop presentations
Intended to be interactive, hands-on skill-building classes that may be combined with instructional content. Attendance affords the enrollees with an unparalleled opportunity for gaining direct, practical knowledge and/or experience relevant to the needs of producers and users of visual communications media. Workshops require extensive preparation by the speaker. Presenters are facilitators, enabling participants to share questions and ideas with their peers. Sessions are typically held in blocks of 1.5 and 3 hours. Participants have enrolled in advance for the course and paid a fee to attend.

Policies

Speakers are not added to the program at the meeting. Potential presenters must fill out a submission form and submit it by January 31, 2013. Speakers do not receive honoraria, lodging, or travel expenses and pay the registration fee that corresponds to their membership category. The presentation is construed as a contribution to the profession and the BCA.

To conserve costs, the BCA requests speakers to provide their own materials. In the event the speaker requires materials, advance approval for reimbursement must be obtained from the Program or Workshop Chair. Any unused materials for which reimbursement has been approved become the property of the BCA.

Submissions will be reviewed by the BIOCOMM2013 meeting committee and notification of acceptance will be provided by February 28.
