Institute of Photographic Technology turns 70
This year celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Institute of Photographic Technology, Incorporated (IPT), founded in Melbourne, Australia in 1946.
The IPT boasts a diverse membership ranging from scientific, medical, industrial and defense photographers to professional photographic artists. All members have a common link with the aims of the Institute, that is, to embrace technology, to enhance the art and science, investigation and communication of photographic imaging.
Four to six meetings are held each year. The topics are as diverse as the membership. The meetings provide a forum for professional networking, presentation and demonstration, discussion and debate.
To celebrate the 70th anniversary, IPT had a special luncheon with presentations and a display of photographic items representing the era from 1946 to today. The event was held at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital that was celebrating it's 75th year.
Professor David Malin (FIPT) gave a thought provoking presentation on the birth of photography and its relationship to astronomy.
Peter Michael of Michaels Camera Digital and Video gave a brief presentation on the history of his family's business that was celebrating 100 years at the prominent location in the central business district of Melbourne. It has seen five generations of the Michael family creating and forming the company into its important position supporting the photographic industry.
Phil Ramsden, long standing IPT member and avid photographic collector, gave a presentation on his, and his family's involvement with photography throughout his professional career. He noted that he was also celebrating his own 75th birthday as well. His presentation was illustrated by various examples of his collection including daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and other items from his extensive photographic collection.
IPT President, Danielle Edwards (FBCA, FIPT) and Gale Spring (FBCA, FIPT), IPT Past President organized 70th anniversary celebration. Mementos of the 70th anniversary were provided to all members and guests in the form of a 'bucket hat' and stainless steel mug both with the IPT logo. Everyone enjoyed a memorable, fun-filled and casual day.
