BCA Honors Banquet held at BIOCOMM 2017
The BCA annual honors banquet was held at BIOCOMM 2017 in Portland, Oregon. At the heart of the Honors Banquet BCA celebrates individuals whose creative vision and meritorious service are an inspiration to everyone who contributes to the advancement of media in education and the life sciences.
Nominations for the Louis Schmidt Award, Fellowship and Emeritus are directed to the chair of each committee. Each committee reviews all the nominations and selects the honorees. In 2017, four nominees were chosen.
Richard A. McNeely was selected for the highest award given – The Louis Schmidt Award. Rick was Director of Biomedical Communications, University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson. Rick was named founding co-director of the Arizona Telemedicine Program, that is widely known as a national leader in telemedicine and telehealth training. He also served as president for BCA and as chair of the Journal of Biocommunication Management Board. For full details, visit the Schmidt Laureates web page.
Connie Johansen, RBP, was honored with Fellowship. Connie, a BCA member since 1982, has served two terms as President for BCA, Past Vice President, Pacific Northwest Chapter President and chair several BCA committees. She has presented at multiple BIOCOMM conferences. Connie recently retired from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency in Springfield, VA. She served as a supervisory multimedia specialist with a team of 17 developers and designers. Her support and contributions to BCA and distinguished service to the advancement of media in biocommuncitions is outstanding. It is a great pleasure to recognize Connie as a Fellow to BCA.
Dr. A. Robin Williams, BSc, MPhil, PhD, DGPh, FIMI, FBPA, FRPS, FBIPP, was honored with Emeritus. Both Robin (1993) and Gigi (2006) are Schmidt Laureates. Robin is a distinguished photographer with more than forty years of experience. For over 20 years he was a Professor of Photography and Dean of the Faculty of Art, Design and Communication at RMIT University. He is currently a member of the Governing Council of the Photographic Studies College in Melbourne, Australia and Chair of its Academic Board. He has been an active member of BCA and a regular contributor to BioImages. In 1993 Robin was awarded BCAs highest honor, the Louis Schmidt Award.
Gigi Williams, BAppSc, FRPS, FAIMBI, FBPA, was also honored with Emeritus. She has over 30 years of experience as a practitioner and manager, beginning her career at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. She then moved to the Educational Resource Centre at the Royal Children's Hospital as a medical photographer and was soon promoted to Chief Medical Photographer and then Head of Department. Her special interests are: measurement using photography; pediatric medical photography and photography with invisible radiation, on which she wrote a 50,000 word thesis to gain her Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society. Gigi was honored in 2006 with the Louis Schmidt Award.
