BIOCOMM 2019 at Asilomar State Beach and Conference Center
BIOCOMM 2019 is shaping up to be an exciting and educational meeting. The program is full of dynamic workshops and presentations. Have a peek at the preliminary program, abstracts and speakers’ biographies to get a taste of what’s in store at the meeting. Set in a great location at Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove, California. That’s in the Monterey area, right on the beach.
Take a deep breath and settle in for a time of serene relaxation, reflection and rejuvenation. Celebrated as Monterey Peninsula's "Refuge by the Sea" – Asilomar State Beach and Conference Grounds is a breathtakingly gorgeous 107 acres of ecologically diverse beachfront land. Asilomar offers guests the simple comforts of cozy cottages and historic lodges - and an unforgettable escape from the demands of everyday life.
We are offering two workshops on Tuesday, June 18 before the opening reception and BioImages Awards Ceremony. These workshops are included in your registration, so join us for the afternoon activities, then meet up with everyone at the opening reception. We have a very full program this year, including a couple of photo walks around the Asilomar State Park and conference center grounds.
Asilomar Conference Center sits nestled along the shoreline of the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean, serving as a tranquil ocean front retreat cradled by towering pine forests, pristine sand dunes and the dramatic rocky coastline of the Monterey Peninsula. Since 1913, Asilomar has played host to tens of thousands of guests seeking an escape to a peaceful environment in a unique and natural setting. 30 historic buildings, many designed by Hearst Castle architect Julia Morgan, house 313 guest rooms with views of the forest, surf or sand. Amid this tranquil oasis, BIOCOMM 2019 attendees will enjoy a fun and relaxing getaway in the quaint town of Pacific Grove. Asilomar offers free parking, free Wi-Fi and a heated pool.
The academic program starts Wednesday morning with our Maria Ikenberg Lindberg keynote speaker, Scott Bourne, Olympus Visionary and an amazing bird photographer. Check out his website scottbourne.com and you will be amazed. To complement, Bob Turner and Jamie Hayden will take us on an early morning photo walk around Asilomar State Park to look for birds and other wildlife to photograph.
Due to the unique coastal ecology of the Monterey Bay Area, Asilomar is located in the heart of one of the top 5 birding destinations in North America. During BIOCOMM 2019, you will have free access to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's online tutorial. The Lab also publishes a list of birds that you may see at Asilomar during BIOCOMM 2019. A real-time, online checklist program, eBird has revolutionized the way that the birding community reports and accesses information about birds. Launched in 2002 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, eBird provides rich data sources for basic information on bird abundance and distribution at a variety of spatial and temporal scales.
The diverse range of topics on offer at this years conference will keep you stimulated and motivated. If you want to learn more about public relations photography, we have a workshop for that. Do you want to dive into ultraviolet or infrared photography, we have that too. Forensics, optimizing your digital file, ethical practices, science and art, clinical photography, and digital asset management are just a few of the offerings during the week. Gaze at cannabis under the microscope images with Ted Kinsman, the 2019 Schmidt Laureate recipient. This year’s Pioneer Members Lecturer, Scott Miles will talk about our Passion for Visual Communications.
