BioImages 2017 Judges

Paul CromptonPaul Crompton, FBCA

Paul has recently retired as Director of the Media Resources Centre at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, UK. A clinical photographer and teacher with over 35 years experience, he lead one of the UK's largest medical photography units. As well as providing a service to clinicians and clinical teachers, the Centre also trains clinical photographers for the Wales National Health Service, running a Postgraduate Certificate in collaboration with Cardiff University.

A regular presenter at conferences in the UK and North America, Paul has published a number of papers in peer-reviewed journals and received awards for his clinical photography. His work was recognised with Honorary Fellowships of the BCA and IMI (UK) and he was 2014 Louis Schmidt Laureate. Although retired, Paul continues to support the Phoenix Project as an Associate of Cardiff University.

Charles Hedgcock, RBP, FBCA

Charles "Chip" Hedgcock has been a professional Biocommunicator since starting as a medical photographer for the University of Arizona's department of BioCommunications in 1984. He later transferring to the U of A's Department of Neuroscience. He now works with the U of A's department of Entomology.

Chip's dexterity with a camera and his keen interest in natural history continue to lead him on photography and research expeditions throughout the desert Southwest and Sonora, Mexico. His award winning photographs have appeared in an eclectic mix of publications including; LensWork, Spin, Ranger Rick, BBC Wildlife, Outdoor Photographer, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Nature, and the Journal of BioCommunications.

Kathleen WagnerKathleen Wagner, MFA, CMI

Kathleen Wagner grew up in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan and always had an interest in art as well as science. She received her BFA with a concentration in drawing from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. During the summers Kathleen worked as a medical assistant for a plastic surgeon and an OB GYN. She received her MFA degree in Medical and Biological Illustration from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Kathleen has worked at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas for 26 years. She is currently the Associate Director of the Medical Graphics & Photography Department. Kathleen is a member of the Association of Medical Illustrators and has won awards for her illustrations from the AMI, BCA and other institutions.

Will Willner, RBP, FBPA

Will Willner currently teaches traditional, silver based, photography in the art department at Wake Forest University. Previously, he was on the faculty and director of photography at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Prior to that, he was an Assistant Professor in the Medical Illustration Graduate Program as well as Director of Medical Photography at the Medical College of Georgia.

Will is a RBP, a fellow of the association and has served on the Board of Governors as well as chairman of the Board of Registry. He has won many awards at the association's salon and has over 80 exhibits of his personal photography.

BioImages is an annual visual media competition that showcases the finest still, graphics and motion media work in the life sciences and medicine. Entries are evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges based on their impact, clarity, scientific content, technique, lighting, image quality, presentation, creativity, originality and effective use of the medium to fulfill its purpose. Best of Show, Award of Excellence, and Citation of Merit awards, in addition to five sponsored Merit Awards, are given in three visual media divisions: Still, Graphics and Motion. Winners are announced at the BioImages Opening Reception and Awards Presentation, held each year in conjunction with the association's annual meeting.
