BCA News: Fall 2016

Dwayne Hayden retires after 49½ years at El Camino College, Torrance, CA.

by Alan Goldstein, FBPA

On July 1, 2016 my good friend Dwayne Hayden retired, from El Camino College in Torrance, CA after 49½ years of service. Dwayne started at El Camino in the Biology Lab and from there he was asked to start the Audiovisual Department where he assisted professors and staff producing lecture slides, photos of equipment, cleaning of 16mm films, producing video tapes, and recording and setting-up downlinks from other colleges.

The local cable channel asked Dwayne to videotape the Athletic Hall of Fame and he donated his time for years doing this and many other events for the college.

Dwayne is a long time member of the BPA – BCA and attended his first annual meeting in 1975. The trip to the meeting was the start of a friendship with Bob Turner, RBP, FBPA, who drove with Dwayne from Southern California to Phoenix, AZ.

For many years, Dwayne was asked to be the Chairperson of Southern California BCA Chapter. He volunteered for many positions and was able to get vendors and was successful in having chapter meetings nine months out of the year! He also kept the chapter going when it was hard to get attendees in Southern California due to traffic.

Dwayne also worked on many BPA annual meetings where once again he was able to get vendors for the meeting. For several years he served as a judge for the Salon and would often help me in setting up the photos for display.

Dwayne has presented many papers at local and national meetings, as well as being the photographer for many of the meetings.

Chuck Griner, Dwayne and myself (Alan Goldstein) are known as the "Three Amigos", sharing rooms and sharing BBQ places. We would drive for miles to get good BBQ!

When I was at work and needed help with a video project, he was there with extra lights, C-stands, or being a video dolly grip. Dwayne would just say, "What time do you want me there?" And when he asked for help videotaping graduation at El Camino, I was there with my camera.

Dwayne is a true friend that gives to so many and is most appreciated for his service to our association.

A celebratory luncheon was held for Dwayne on October 4th at The Reef restaurant in Long Beach, CA to recognize his well-earned retirement at El Camino College. BCA members and friends who attended included, Chuck Griner, Allen Hayden (Dwayne's son), Tom Merrill, FBPA, Bob Turner, RBP, FBPA, and myself. After a hearty toast and a delicious meal, Dwayne received a number of personal gifts and cards along with an elegantly framed graphic print I crafted especially for him. We all wish Dwayne a very happy and healthy retirement!
