Medical Photographer

Requirements: Graduation from a standard senior high school and six years of experience as a photographer involving photography of multiple different subject matters, utilizing multiple different photographic techniques and equipment, beyond that required for routine taking and processing of photographs, that sufficiently demonstrates the ability to learn and perform specialized scientific photography and the computerized processing and editing work, on either a salaried or commissioned basis.

Additional education in photography from a college with federally authorized accreditation or registration by NY State may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years.

Additional education in medical photography from a college with federally authorized accreditation or registration by NY State may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis.

This position requires working on weekends and holidays. Salary $49,538.

Digital Imaging Specialist

The University of Southern California (USC) Libraries seek a Digital Imaging Specialist to join the Digital Library Team to digitize negatives from the Dick Whittington Collection, historic photographs of Los Angeles taken in the late 1930s - 1940s. The Digital Imaging Specialist will use camera-based capture to digitize negatives and be responsible for post-processing, quality control and digital asset management. The Imaging Specialist provides support, assistance and advice in the use of digitization equipment and software to faculty, staff and students.

Research Assistant
The Wistar Institute – Philadelphia, PA

As a team member in an Imaging Core Facility at an NCI Basic Cancer Research Center, you will be responsible for a wide range of imaging modalities in support of cutting-edge cancer research and vaccine development. Your primary duties will be for training, assistance, and protocol development in pre-clinical, small animal imaging inside a small animal barrier facility using our Perkin Elmer IVIS Spectrum CT instrument, which is capable of 2D and 3D quantitative fluorescence, bioluminescence and microCT acquisition. In addition, collaboration with researchers to optimize their experimental protocols and assistance with post-imaging quantitative analysis and are a large part of the position. You will be responsible for maintaining, calibrating, optimizing imaging equipment, tracking equipment usage data and ordering and maintaining supplies for the IVIS imager.

All lab members are also cross-trained and available for assistance with standard widefield microscopes, confocal and 2-photon microscopy, as well as any other photographic equipment that might be needed. Our facility covers everything from portraits of cells to portraits of people and often requires creative approaches to scientific questions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biological or physical sciences and at least 1 year of experience in a research environment
  • Experience assisting with small animals (primarily mice) in a barrier facility environment.
  • Familiarity with fluorescence microscopy and other imaging techniques
  • Ability to effectively interact with users at all levels of experience and knowledge
  • Genuine curiosity and ability to problem-solve
  • Strong computing skills are preferred
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task
  • Team player – strong desire to teach and learn

Scientific & Technical Photographer
Naval Medical Center – Portsmouth, VA

You will serve as a Scientific & Technical Photographer in the Education & Training Division of the Naval Medical Center. Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-10 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Providing biomedical photography and videography services such as autopsy, intra-operative, gross specimen, microscopy, etc.;
  • Providing on-call 24 hour photographic services to clients;
  • Designing and modifying professional photography and videography equipment into configurations;
  • Monitoring and evaluating advances in biomedical photography, forensic imaging, professional video, production and digital media;
  • Operating digital darkroom hardware to process images, create prints, and perform color and white balance calibration;
  • Assisting patients before, during, and after photography or videography to help them feel comfortable with the process and develop a rapport;
  • Documenting clinical and surgical photography procedures; and
  • Videotaping medical procedures, events, training evolutions or staged performances to create visual information productions requested by the clients.

As a Forensic Photographer, you will serve as a recognized technical specialist and authoritative consultant in photographic matters (laboratory and field operations) and in the establishment, development and application of special photographic investigative technologies. Produce all types of visual communications products using traditional visual artist tools and/or computer graphics and/or layout and spreadsheet software desktop systems to convey intended information for both electronic and printed media. Assignments include application of advanced photographic and visual art technology to investigations in terrorism and security matters, crime scene response, designing alerts and reports, and specialized forensic matters.
