One of the greatest benefits of attending in person is the opportunity to participate in hands-on workshops. They are an integral part of the program and are included in the registration fee. These hands-on workshops provide a unique opportunity to learn new skills and engage with peers and experts.
Pixels to Presence: How Emerging Technologies Are Changing the Way We See and Share Science
New sensor technologies, artificial intelligence, and advanced visualization are rapidly expanding the limits of scientific imaging. From computational microscopy and AI-enhanced images, to mobile LiDAR, 3D reconstruction, Gaussian splatting and virtual reality, we can now capture and communicate information that was previously difficult—or impossible—to see. This presentation explores these advances through practical examples and considers what they mean for the future role of the scientific communicator.
Photography, its Technology, & Pictures
Photography and its related tools have become so easy to operate that photography is taken for granted and assumed by most that this is how it always has been. When Michael Peres joined BCA in 1979, then the BPA, he started a diverse and unexpected 50-year career as a medical photographer, professor of biomedical photographic communications, author, big shot coordinator, and snowflake photographer. Peres will share stories about his work and the tools required to produce film pictures of barely visible and moving objects, as well as RIT’s evolution from a 1000 student film photography school into a contemporary place to make and study electronic pictures, while maintaining a small but vibrant film arts community.

Conference and Accommodation Venue
The BIOCOMM 2027 conference will be held at the Chelsea Hotel in located in the heart of downtown Toronto. Featuring 1588 rooms spanning two towers, the hotel offers private balconies in most rooms. The Chelsea Hotel has two restaurants, two swiming pools, gym, and a roof top sundeck. The city is at your doorstep with easy access to the public transportation.
We have secured a BIOCOMM room rate of $299 CAD per night (plus 19.78% tax) and BIOCOMM attendees willl receive $10 CAD off per day for
hotel parking.
