Passing of former BCA Member Steve Sampley

Stephen R. Sampley, RBP

August 24, 1943 - September 15, 2023

Stephen R. Sampley, RBP, passed on September 15 after a long illness in Phoenix, Arizona. He served multiple terms as Vice-President, and President of the Southern California chapter of BPA/BCA. He was the first medical photography department head in Southern California to offer internships to students from Brooks Institute of Photography such as Debbie Stambaugh RBP, and Margret Marshall. He was a member of the planning and operations teams for the highly successful BIO76 meeting, the largest annual meeting that BPA/BCA has ever staged.

Steve was also a respected shop steward of SEIU Local 660, a member of the board of directors of 660, and a skilled union contract negotiator who worked successfully to elevate the salaries of L.A. County photographers as well as elevating the salaries of L.A. County medical photographers.

Steve served as Supervising Medical Photographer of the Medical Photography Department of L.A. County Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center several decades before moving into hospital administration. He would later transfer to L.A. County-U.S.C. Medical Center where he would continue in hospital administration until his retirement after 40 years.

He is survived by his wife; Sandy Sampley, daughter; Stacia Sampley Barler, and 2 grandsons.
