Stephan Ballard's life and work in Montreal are marked by an enduring journey of creative exploration. Having pursued studies in graphic design and photography at Concordia University, he swiftly emerged onto the artistic scene with participation in numerous collective and solo exhibitions across Canada and Europe. His creative evolution took a significant turn in 1996 when he was honored with the Barbara Spohr Grant, which led him to an enriching period of development at the Banff Art Centre. Here, he integrated emerging new media into his artistic process, benefiting from a multidisciplinary foundation in design, art, and photography.
Stephan's artistic endeavors intersected with technological advancements, as he navigated the transition from traditional chemical photography to the digital realm. This transformative phase nurtured a deep sensitivity to the ever-evolving landscape of technology and reinforced the importance of cultivating adaptable creativity in response to shifting mediums.
His creative journey took an unexpected turn during the COVID-19 pandemic when he was recruited by the medical photography team at CHU Sainte-Justine in Montreal. This marked his introduction to the world of medical photography and surgical imaging, which he embraced with a profound enthusiasm. Drawing from his prior experience at the National Film Board of Canada, he embarked on a dedicated exploration of surgical photography techniques, seamlessly merging them with cinematic compositional methods to enhance the educational potential of medical visuals. This innovative initiative garnered recognition within the medical community at McGill University, where his blend of artistic proficiency and medical insight earned him the esteemed Michèle-Larose Osler Grant.
Presently, Stephan passionately engages in an ongoing collaborative project with surgeons, juxtaposing the venerable anatomical illustrations of rare medical literature with real-time surgical interventions to offer a distinctive narrative within medical imaging.
Since June, he has channeled his passion and determination into this project, embodying an unwavering commitment to contribute meaningfully to medical imagery and education.
