BCA News: Fall 2019

BCA Member News

Welcome new BCA Members!

We are pleased to welcome new members to the association. With them comes a knowledge bank of technical and education resources of great value to visual communicators.

Please welcome our newest member Christina Gundersen, Gundersen & Price, New York.

BCA Chapters

One of the benefits of being a BCA member is gaining access to other colleagues in your geographic area. In this edition of the News we demonstrate this with two stories of members collaborating on photographic journeys. Please read their stories In Search of Desert Bighorn Sheep and The Beauty of the Palouse.

Gene McDermott and Tom Merrill

Many members meet at meetings and become colleagues. Over time these relationships often blossom into lifelong friendships. This is evident with Tom Merrill and Gene McDermott who met up again recently for a reunion.

Tom Merrill and Gene McDermott met at a NY Chapter meeting in January 24, 1968 at Lenox Hill Hospital. They are still friends 51 years later! 102 years combined experience of BPA/BCA!

"People ask, what did you get from BPA/BCA? A career and life-long friends."
– Tom Merrill, FBPA

If you attended BIOCOMM 2019 then you already know what a great meeting we had, but if you didn't get the opportunity you can still read about the highlights.

BIOCOMM 2020 will be in Santa Fe, New Mexico. 19-23 May 2020. Think about submitting a paper in the academic program or conducting a workshop. The deadline is Friday, December 20.

Come and enjoy Santa Fe in its greatest season for weather, and being off-peak tourist season, reap the financial benefits. More information on the meeting can be found here.

BioImages 2020

BioImages is an opportunity to showcase your work to your peers. The BioImages 2019 salon certainly does this with the variety and breadth of imaging. Don't wait for next year's announcement to start working on your submission for 2020.

An important change to note is that this year entries open earlier on February 1 and close February 29. The deadline is only just over 4 months away. Time flies so think about your entry now. Take a look at this years salon and winning entries.

Endowment Fund for Education

You still have three months until EFFE Applications close on 1 February 2020. If you have any ideas that you think would be suitable for an EFFE grant or BIOCOMM grant please contact the EFFE co-chairs of you have any questions about eligibility. The EFFE guidelines and contacts can be found here.

Journal of Biocommunication

JBC is the peer-reviewed journal of BCA. Jim Wetzel, FBCA is the BCA editor. He is ready and available to assist you with any idea for an article. Jim is not only experienced in publishing journal articles himself, but also teaches his students on how to publish.

Contact Jim if you have an idea but don't know how to get started on writing an article. He is keen to assist you in getting a piece published as an author in our peer reviewed journal.

BCA Newsletter

Nothing is too big or too small to share with other members. Have you received any awards or recognition, do you have a story to share? Have you been on any photographic assignments, photographic adventures or had an exhibition? Do you have 'go to' web sites that others may be interested in? Don't keep all the good stuff to yourself. Let others know so we can all grow our knowledge and expertise. After all, that's why we are members of BCA.

If you have anything you wish to contribute to BCA news please get in touch with the Director of Communications. The deadline for the next BCA news submissions is January 15, 2020

Winter Holiday Break Suggestions

The silly season will be upon us before we know it. Although it's cold (or hot depending on which hemisphere you live in!), it's festive and a time to celebrate with friends and family. While you are sitting around recovering from your seasonal bellyache of overindulgence, why not think about writing an article for the Journal of Biocommunication, the BCA News or an EFFE grant application.

Go outside into the environment and take some images, set up a macro studio and take some photos or get out your pencils or your electronic tablet and create an illustration.

Look through your database of images you've taken or created throughout the year. Share your achievements with the rest of us. Submit them to BioImages, get published and gain peer recognition.

Before you know it EEFE grants will have closed and BioImages will follow shortly after. Take action now or you'll have to wait for another year!
