Skin Expander Removal for Facial Reconstruction Surgery

Andrew Hammerand,

Phoenix, Arizona , United States

The patient, who has a history of recurrent nasal skin cancer and has previously undergone resection and radiation treatment, is now beginning their facial reconstruction surgery. The initial step in this process involves bringing fresh skin from the lateral face to the medial face in order to reconstruct the nasal base, close the holes that have developed into the sinus from their cheek, and provide support for the left lower eyelid. In the first image, the patient is depicted at their post-cancer treatment baseline, with an expander placed in the left cheek to stretch the skin and create additional tissue. The middle photo shows the removal of the expander, allowing the facial tissue to be freed up for transfer. Subsequently, the facial tissue is relocated from medial to lateral positions to reconstruct the left medial cheek, effectively close the fistulas, and support the lower eyelid.
